LIKE DRAKE BUT WITHOUT LIL’ WAYNE (& GOOD)

The Weeknd. Been pretty slow on this guy. Heard so much positive talk about him but never quite got round to listening to him apart from a fantastic remix of Florence’s Shake It Out. What a little Canadian beauty!

He released his 3rd free mixtape, Echoes of Silence, at the tail end of last year. His crooning R&B vocals are superbly complemented by his own echoic, off-beat, melancholic production. Chances are you have already heard this guy, either through his own stuff or through his label-mate Drake, for whom he has produced many a track. Unlike his fellow Canadian, he seems not to crave the limelight which in the modern R&B world is certainly refreshing.

Below is his version of Michael Jackson’s awesome Dirty Diana. Not many Michael Jackson covers are even a little bit good, not many people would even dare try. The Weeknd smashes it. If the future of R&B is this guy and Frank Ocean, I’m excited.

Oh, and all 3 mixtapes can be found here for free!
