It seems like forever and a day since the likes of Jill Scott, Floetry, Lauryn Hill & India.Arie were all at the forefront of afrocentricity and neo-soul. The laid back rhythms and soulful melodies of this pure genre always carried a message and were such a positive response to commercial hip-pop and the R&B of the late 1990s and early 2000s. More importantly it showcased a whole load of good, honest music, but the neo-soul scene has been pretty quiet of late.
Janelle Monáe has risen as the new soul princess in the last 18 months, while a recent Erykah Badu release showcases she is most definitely still the undisputed queen. Following in the beautiful steps as them are these two ladies from Seattle, THEESatisfaction.
